Screen Shot 2013-07-25 at 11.28.15 PMAccording to Eiji Aonuma, he’s come across a unique difficulty in developing A Link Between Worlds when it comes to certain conventions the series has adhered to. According to an interview with Edge Online, the difficulty comes from series creator Shigeru Miyamoto. Specifically, he doesn’t remember details about the development of A Link to the Past. Hit the jump for the full statements.

In the interview with Edge, Aonuma addresses several concerns people have expressed about how similar A Link Between Worlds will be to its predecessor, as well as how he uses his experiences developing other Zelda games to inform his design philosophy. When asked whether he turns to Shigeru Miyamoto and Takeshi Tezuka for advice, Aonuma reveals that he has, but the trouble is that they often don’t remember why they made certain decisions during A Link to the Past’s development. In particular, Aonuma mentions that Miyamoto does not remember the reason behind the convention of Link being left-handed (changed as of Twilight Princess).

A similar problem has befallen many who work in their industry for long periods of time. Stan Lee, co-creator of many characters published by Marvel Comics has a notoriously awful memory. So while it’s certainly within the realm of possibility that Miyamoto has forgotten certain details, it’s a little sad that one of the grandfathers of the video game industry is beginning to show his age.
